The influence of some zeolites on the dye removal from wastewaters
In the first part of our investigations, the degradation of complex organic dyes by a combination of liquid phase pulsed corona discharge reactor with zeolite catalysts has been studied. Several commercial dyes, mainly reactive, were chosen, varying their size of molecules and type of chromophores. The concentration of model wastewaters was in range of 15-20 mg/L while the zeolites studied were of two types: NH4+ Mordenite and Y . Pulse corona treatment with 45 kV voltage pulsed was applied for 30 min to the model dye wastewater. The obtained results showed the significant decreases of TC (81 %) and AOX (90 %)in almost all cases. The comparison of the results obtained in corona reactor without and with addition of zeolites will be given. Parallel investigation was done on printing ink wastewaters, when several types of zeolites were applied on pretreated water by coagulation. It has been shown that the main role of zeolites is adsorption of certain particles onto their surfaces but also they act as a catalyst which "helps" Fenton s reaction in Corona reactor forming OH radicals or encapsulate the small molecules of dyes (such as Direct Orange39) or smaller particles of molecules present in water within their pores.
