Translational Science and Personalized Medicine Approach
Personalized medicine primarily involves an individual approach to the patients aiming at better predicting, preventing and treating or curing diseases as well as monitoring them in their daily life. The principle of personalized medicine is the assumption that the disease is treated on the basis of the patient's specific individual characteristics and needs. This requires a high level of understanding of all available data and using the knowledge of molecular biology, physiology and clinical features of diseases as well as conveying this knowledge to patients and the community at large. Personalized approach to the patient also allows better allocation of the healthcare budget at the level of national European healthcare systems, thereby achieving significant savings in medical care and the delivery of medicines. Personalized medicine is closely related to diagnostics. Technologies that support diagnostics are, for the first time, being brought together with the disciplines underpinning medical product development. Acceptance and persistent implementation of personalized medicine will therefore require a high degree of collaboration amongst stakeholders in many areas of science and medicine.
