Evaluation of a glass-ionomer based restoration system-a one year pilot study
The aim of the present pilot study was to evaluate the clinical performance of a recently developed glass ionomer cement with coating in permanent teeth within a 12-month period. Forty five Equia restorations were placed in 35 permanent molars, 6 premolars and 4 permanent anterior teeth in 27 patients. Equia restorations were clinically evaluated at baseline and at recalls after 3, 6 and 12 months. Modified USPHS evaluation criteria were used for assessment of restorations for retention, color matching, marginal discoloration, marginal adaptation, secondary carious lesions, surface texture, anatomic form and postoperative sensitivity Restorations were scored as follows: Alpha represented the ideal clinical situation ; Bravo was clinically acceptable ; Charlie was clinically unacceptable situations where the restoration had to be replaced. After one year, none of the restorations failed according to the modified USPHS evaluation criteria. Secondary caries and postoperative sensitivity were not observed in any of the restorations. Within the limitations of the present studs, the results suggest that the new glass ionomer cement restorations with coating are clinically acceptable, but further studies of longer durations are needed to confirm these outcomes.
