An olive leaf extract as corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel
In this paper we investigated the efficiency of olive leaf extract (Olea europaea L.) as a novel, environmentally acceptable corrosion inhibitor, for carbon steel in a distilled water and in the simulated oilfield brine using the mass loss and electrochemical methods. Inhibitor concentrations 50, 100, 150 and 200 mg/l were examined. Measurements were conducted in an open system at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. The efficiency of the inhibitor was tested using the electrochemical method. Using the method of quasi- potentiostatic polarisation (Tafel extrapolation) we determined the corrosion potential (Ecor), the density of corrosion current (jcor), the surface coverage (Θ), and the efficiency of the inhibitor (z). Stereomicroscopic testing of different states of the surface of carbonic steel was also conucted. The results of the examination have shown the possibility of decreasing the corrosion rate of carbonic steel in the simulated oilfield brine by using the olive leaf extract.
