ALKALINE PHOSPHATASE ACTIVITY AND STRUCTURE OF THE PLANKTON COMMUNITY IN THE COASTAL PREVLAKA AQUATORY (SOUTH ADRIATIC SEA) IN APRIL 2011.
Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutritive element utilized by all living organisms for growth and energy transport, being critically involved in the biological productivity of aquatic systems. In the scarce pool of dissolved PO4, phytoplankton inductively synthesize alkaline phosphatase AP. Potential alkaline phosphatase activity APA of the plankton community was determined during relatively uniform thermohaline conditions in the water column of coastal Prevlaka region (South Adriatic Sea). Chl a was used as indicator of phytoplankton biomass for expression of specific alkaline phosphatase activity sAPA. Secchi disch depth 13 m indicated light penetration throughout whole water column. Concentration of nutrients, Chl a and dissolved oxygen saturation were typical for oligotrophic seas, documented consequently in low TRIX values. TIN/PO4 didn't show stronger disturbances from theoretically balanced Redfield value ~ 16, hence no obvious P–limitation of phytoplankton growth could be confirmed. Rise of APA in surface layer and maximum at 10 m (103.71 nM P/h) was dominantly connected to cyanobacteria. APA minimum at 20 m (35.17 nM P/h) was consequence of lower abundance of cyanobacteria and autotrophic picoflagellates. sAPA performed similar pattern as abundance of cyanobacteria throughout whole water column. sAPA minimum at 40 m (2.69 nmol P/μg C h) expressed ~ 1/3 of sAPA maximum at 10 m (8.03 nmol P/μg C h). Towards bottom greater share of bigger phytoplankton was expected.
