Solar city, Linz, Aaustria success and failure of a sustainable settlement
Solar City, a sustainable settlement built in 2005 in the vicinity of Linz, Austgria, relies on three sustainability factors (economical growth, ecological balance and social progress) and represents a possible model for urban development in the 21st century. On a plot of 32 ha, 1.317 apartments have been built for about 3.000 inhabitants. The subject of this research is social progress, one of three factors of sustainability. According to the Leipzig Charter, an integral part of the sustainable development concept of European cities is the creation of high-quality urban structures. On the example of the Solar City, we will investigate the successes and failures of a sustainable settlement by analyzing the concept of urban development as well as the „quality“ of space. The analysis will encompass the physical structures of the settlements and their ability to become an expression of value of identity, continuity, readability, availability and sustainability of the settlements by taking over appropriate functions.
