Contemporary Croatian Architecture: The Formation of New Practices
Intense conditions of transition and change that Croatia has been going through in the last two decades (social, political, economic, administrative, structural) prompted local architecture and urbanism to change their modes of operation and functioning in order to remain effective and operative. As a consequence, a new generation of young architectural practices has been formed—based primarily on experimentation, critical play and innovation—that are able to successfully meet the new turbulent circumstances. Adept and flexible, experimental and critical, they result in convincing spatial and formal effects and an overall architectural quality. Although immensely attractive in their new, original forms, the true strength and importance of these new architectural practices lies precisely in their sustainability and intended broader social effects. The aim of this work is to present these new practices and introduce the most exciting examples, while trying to detect their specific “mode of working” and to show how it is in fact funded on specific local architectural tradition: on lessons of building heritage and inherited logic of creative process, along with its ambitions, values and goals. The purpose of such analysis is to reinstate faith in the critical potential of the discipline of architecture, and to recuperate the nowadays somewhat decrepit belief in its general significance and relevance.
