Red stars, black shirts: symbols of commemoration and the conflicts of World War Two history in Croatia
The conflicted versions of the Croatian past during World War Two, the so called "red-black" division in the Croatian society is not merely a debate between historians and other researchers and scholars. Although certain commentators believe that the ongoing obsession with the ustaša and the partisans is in reality an invention of the (liberal) media with the purpose of increasing sales and creating divisions in Croatian society, the political manifestations in these places of memory show how deep this trauma from the past actually is, and how much it is interwoven in the political culture and contemporary life.
