Introduction to Soundscape - Conscious Urbanism : Urban Sound Environment Between the Soundscape Theory and the Architectural Phenomenological Discourse

Sound related issues in urbanism are mainly concerned solely with noise mitigation or other specific tasks. This practice includes only the ‘negative’ aspect of soundscape and the necessary part of architectural acoustics. In recent years, we have witnessed the increasing of research seriously considering issues related to the sound phenomenon within the holistic spatial experience. The ‘positive’ soundscape planning and design are a possible approach to urban space related tasks. The aim of this research is to detect the principles which could help to establish soundscape-conscious theory and practice in urbanism. Two different theoretical approaches to the sound environment have been discussed: the soundscape approach and the architectural phenomenological one. The former is based on the system of soundscape theory and its implications on urbanism while the latter is set within the architectural phenomenological discourse. The research on soundscape offers numerous tools for analysing and interpreting existing soundscapes alongside with cutting edge techniques for predicting soundscape changes. Phenomenological discourse, on the other hand, is much less elaborated by means of analysis, yet it stresses the need for understanding and controlling the spatial sensory experience of the whole. Soundscape is inevitably connected to the design of the built environment. Architects and planners design the built environment, thus influencing the soundscape issue. The interdisciplinarity brings about the need to develop adequate analysis tools and to define key elements and concepts in order to enable the achieving of the intended spatial sensory experience.
