Spatial Planning of Tourism - The Situation and the Consequences
Many cities and municipalities in Croatia, especially along the coast, tourism is seen as a major goal of development, especially after the Homeland war when they were followed by major socio-economic changes. Despite all the positive annual tourism indicators in the last decade (the number of tourists, number of nights), spatial planners expressed growing disagreement. There is no doubt that tourism can contribute to the development and renovation of certain areas, because tourism is one of the fastest growing economic activity. But unplanned tourism development than achieving short-term economic benefits may result in negative consequences for the environment, urban and rural heritage, landscape, etc. Spatial aspects of tourism can not be viewed without any knowledge of tourism trends on a global scale (building bigger hotel complexes, construction of large tourist resorts, increased traffic cruisers, etc.). Attitude toward the global trends in tourism can certainly be matched to determine national policies for spatial development and tourism. The complex relationship between spatial planning and tourism requires an interdisciplinary approach at all levels, quality education, harmonized policy development, cultural planning and responsibility.
