Limit conditions for the application of corrosion resistant steel as reinforcement
One of the methods, used to prolong the time to or avoid corrosion initiation, is the utilisation of certain types of corrosion resistant reinforcement, which have higher resistance to corrosion than black steel reinforcement, and are less expensive than classical stainless steels, which makes their application as reinforcement economically justified. In order to enable the optimal choice of steel for a certain environment, there is a need to correlate corrosion behaviour of different types of steel with the environmental loads. There is also a strong need for quantification of corrosion behaviour of these steels, usually defined through electrochemical parameters, e.g. current or corrosion resistance, through parameters that can be used further in civil engineering practice, e.g. corrosion depth in mm. In this paper a part of the research project investigating the corrosion behaviour of different type of corrosion resistant reinforcement is presented. In the part presented here, different types of reinforcing steels were exposed to alkaline solutions, simulating concrete pore solution, to evaluate their corrosion resistance, On the basis of these results, the critical chloride concentration and pH value of pore solution for initiation of corrosion were determined. Furthermore, different types of corrosion resistant steel are recommended as optimal for different classes of environment.
