Effects of the Coulomb gap on electrical transport and magnetic properties of doped polyaniline

We have carried out a comparative experimental study of the electrical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility of own-made polyaniline pellets doped either with HCl or DBSA acid. For all samples we find that conductivity at low temperature is governed by the variable-range hopping in a homogeneously disordered three-dimensional system of coupled one-dimensional chains. These results can be to a large extent explained by the VRH theory of Fogler, Teber and Shklovskii (FTS) [2004 Phys. Rev. B 69 035413]. In particular, a = 1/2, 2/5, 1/4 are therein predicted for three dimensions, together with crossovers between them as a function of disorder and/or T. The applicability of the FTS model is supported further by an analysis of other relevant features, i.e., the doping (disorder) dependence of T0, electron localisation length, range of energies that contribute to the VRH, and size of the Coulomb gap due to the inconstancy of the density of states for charge excitations. The deprotonated sample is diamagnetic, the as-synthesised sample exhibits a change from diamagnetic to paramagnetic behaviour as temperature decreases, whereas the fully protonated sample is paramagnetic over the whole temperature range.
