Analysis of CaCO3 in photocopy papers treated in surfactant solutions

In this research photocopy papers found on Croatian market (Navigator, Rcopy, Fabriano, Xerox, Pioneer, IQ, Plano Premium) as samples were used. In those original samples quantity of the most common used filler, calcium carbonate was measured volumetrically. All samples were disintegrated in different surfactants (cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium laurylethersulphate and fatty alcohol ethoxylate) and their calcium carbonate content was compared to original. Effectiveness of distillate water and above mentioned surfactants onto calcium carbonate removal during disintegration is also tested. Alcalimetric titration has shown that from all used samples, original Navigator and Fabriano have the highest content of calcium carbonate. Gained results show losses in calcium carbonate quantities in disintegrated samples in comparison with original. Losses in calcium carbonate quantities are greater in samples disintegrated in surfactants than in samples disintegrated in pure distillate water. On given results basis, paper quality (depending on filler quantity in it) and filler loss during paper recycling (depending on surfactant used in process) have been discussed.
