Reynolds stress modeling in computational simulations of the urban atmospheric boundary layer flow
A new approach for determining the physically valid boundary conditions has been developed to allow for an appropriate treatment of Reynolds stress modeling in computational simulations of the urban ABL flow using the k-ε turbulence model. The obtained computational results agree very well with the experimental results. In particular, the calculated mean velocity, Reynolds stress and turbulence kinetic energy profiles remain within ±10% of the experimental results. It is expected that the proposed approach would improve computational simulation of the ABL flow due to an appropriate treatment of Reynolds stress modeling as well as turbulence kinetic energy that declines with increasing height, in agreement with atmospheric conditions. However, this procedure is not yet a mature approach for everyday use. Future work would attempt to make the proposed procedure more appropriate for Computational Wind Engineering (CWE) calculations by adding a physically-valid set of source terms in the momentum equation.
