Aerodynamic loads on vehicles due to the gusty bora wind
Transient aerodynamic loads on a vehicle placed on a bridge were experimentally simulated utilizing the Flow Field Simulator (TFFS) at the University of Notre Dame. A van model was exposed to an air flow, which consisted of an intermittent switching between ‘regular’ wind (lower velocity) and wind gusts (higher velocity). This experimentally generated flow can be assumed to be a valid approximation of the bora wind occurring at the Croatian coast. Side and lift forces, as well as overturning moments experienced by the van, were investigated in this study, as vehicles on bridges are particularly sensitive to wind-induced course deviation and overturning accidents. Experimental results indicate that wind gusting similar to the bora wind causes the turbulent wind energy to shift toward lower frequencies that can significantly deteriorate the vehicle stability, as just 2s to 3s are required to blow over a vehicle.
