Salona archaeological site : landscape transformation and rehabilitation
After WWII, the location of the Salona archaeological site became part of the suburbia of the town of Split surrounded by large industrial areas, quarries and the industrial port. A highway and a railway both traverse a section of the archaeological site. Moreover, the surrounding residential quarters are non- urbanised and non-planned. The area of Salona, characterized by a 2500-year-old urban multi- layeredness, has seen a cultural and landscape degradation in the 20th century. This research represents a model of the revitalisation of the town suburbia through the enhancement of the archaeological site. Apart from the presentation and protection, it is necessary to integrate this archaeological site into contemporary town of Split as the new ecological, recreational, tourist and public space in order to stimulate the transformation of the degraded landscape.
