"mazing Forest" exhibition : celebrating the International year of forests in the Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Science in Zagreb
By restoring the exhibition pavilion which dates back to the 19th century, the Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Science in Zagreb acquired in 2007 both an educational space and representative showroom. During the last five years 11 exhibitions, 34 workshops and 26 lectures were organized in the pavilion, substantially enriching the educational activity of the Garden. Three exhibitions were organized in 2011: Croatian Botanical Gardens and Arboreta – the keepers of live plant collections (presenting all the botanical gardens, arboreta, school gardens and other valuable botanical plant collections in Croatia) ; The Wondrous World of Petals (producing artwork out of dried plant petals) and Amazing Forest (on the occasion of the International Year of Forests). By organizing the exhibition Amazing Forest the Botanical Garden has joined activities with the aim of spreading awareness about the importance of forests and the need for their protection and conservation all over the Planet. At the exhibition many interesting facts could be found out about unusual forests, trees, fruits, wood products and, most importantly, the answer to the fundamental question: why is it important to preserve forests? The authors of the exhibition wanted to present different interesting information about forests to preschool and primary school children in a suitable way. Because of that the children were greted by the famous animated characters Hlapić and Gita at the entrance of the pavilion. They were their guides through the exhibition and answered questions like: do palm trees grow in forests, which is the tallest forest in the world, what is petrified forest, what kinds of forest are there in Croatia etc. Responses and impressions of the visitors were intensely positive and stimulating to the small group of botanists who, beside their regular jobs as curators of plant collections, design the entire educational activity of the Botanical Garden.
