Assessment of intersection reconstruction impact through capacity analysis
One of the expected benefits of reconstruction of the intersection is a larger capacity. Within the traffic network of the city of Osijek reconstructions and transformations of intersections into roundabouts are being done more and more often lately. A four lane intersection on a primary functional level with a traffic regulation regulating priority rules for the main and side directions has been reconstructed into a roundabout. Assessment of impacts made by reconstruction of the intersection through capacity analysis has been done by Swiss, empirical, regression Lausanne method. Results of analysis in current traffic conditions are compared to the prediction of capacity made by means of the same method right before the reconstruction. Lausanne method also offers a basic insight into average delays in particular entrances into a roundabout, but for a detailed analysis of functional characteristics of the examined intersection it is necessary to apply microsimulation traffic modelling.
