Differential effect of microwave energy on lymphocytic and hemopoietic stem cells
In the previous experiments (Period. biol., 99/Suppl 2/:34, 1997) we demonstrated that a 3-second high density "burst" of microwave (MW) energy (2.45 GHz) does not affect the CFU-S of the bone marrow, but it does abrogate the potential of B-cell progenitors to induce chimaerism in CBE/N mice. As one would expect on the basis of our previous work (J. Exp. Med. 147:940, 1978), the control bone marrow cells (not exposed) did induce that sort of chimaerism. In the experiments a common microwave oven (Siemens) was used at the lowest power setting (90W). A 10ml volume of bone marrow cell suspension in a plastic container was placed in the very center of the ove and exposed to 3-second burst of MW irradiation. Using these experimental conditions, we have learned from the present experiments that GVH reactive allogenic spleen cells are also very resistant to MW "shock" irradiation, and the same is true for syngenic tumor cells (a mammary carcinoma of CBA origin). In general, it appears that the cell proliferation and differentiation mechanisms are quite resistant to brief but high density MW irradiation. By contrast, the B-cell progenitors are very susceptible, which might be due to some extranuclear molecular specifities. The presence of inherent immunoglobulines in these cells should be considered, since that might render these cells somehow so susceptible to MW irradiation.
