Investigation of potential microbiologically influenced corrosion in tanks of fire engine from Turkey - for ZIEGLER d.o.o. Zagreb, HR ; Ziegler GmbH&Co.KG, Deutschland

Bacteriological analysis showed the presence of large amount heterotrophic bacteria and among them dominated bacterial species Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter aerogenes and Klebsiella pneumoniae, which may be harmful to human health. Presence of such a great amount of bacteria in water samples may be due to great lap from sampling to analysis (seven days) and due to sampling method (bottles were not sterile). In spite of it identification of potentially harmful bacteria in investigated water samples suggests that those bacteria are present in water distributing system as well. On the contrary just a few iron oxidising bacteria were present in samples. The golden rule, which should be applied to all equipment, in order to prevent and control biocorrosion and biofouling is “KEEP THE SYSTEM CLEAN”. This basic principle can seldom be observed, unless implemented at the early stages of the operation of the system. Due to the poor understanding of the biocorrosion and biofouling processes, they are often properly diagnosed only when the system experiences severe problems, characteristic to either phenomenon. Such problems range from heavy microbial contamination with consequent energy and efficiency losses, to structural failures due to corrosion.
