Prevalence of vitamin D inadequacy in Croatian women according to menopausal status

Vitamin D has been studied extensively due to association with osteoporosis, but it has been found that vitamin D has a biological effect on more than mineral metabolism. Inadequate serum vitamin D (25(OH)D) levels are mostly associated with low dietary intake, limited, exposure and increasing age. The objective of this study is to assess the prevalence of inadequate serum vitamin D concentrations in Croatian women according menopausal status. Main analysis of serum vitamin D was performed in 322 fertile and 217 postmenopausal women (n=539). There are no clear international agreements on what constitutes a level of vitamin D inadequacy. Four cut-offs of 25(OH)D inadequacy were fixed: <80 nmol/L, <75 nmol/L, <50 nmol/L and <30 nmol/L. Mean (SD) age of the whole population was 49.0 (17.3) years, body mass index was 25.3 (5.1) kg/m2. Concentrations of 25(OH)D were 55.6 (28.2) nmol/L and the prevalence of 25(OH)D inadequacy was 84.8 %, 81.6 %, 45.1 % and 22.3 % when considering cut-offs 80, 75, 50 and 30 nmol/L. There was no significant difference of 25(OH)D level between fertile and postmenopausal women (p=0.936) even was highly significant difference of age (p<0.0001). This study indicates a high prevalence of vitamin D inadequacy in Croatian fertile and postmenopausal women. A great awareness of the importance of vitamin D inadequacy is needed to address this public health problem.
