Histopathological findings in abomasa of fallow deer from Brijuni region in Croatia

Background: Histopathological examination was performed on abomasal samples of fallow deer (Dama dama) from Brijuni region in Croatia. Objective: the aim of the study was to determine histopathological changes and possible presence of gastric Helicobacter like organisms in abomasa of fallow deer. Method: paraffine embedded, HE stained samples of 23 abomasa taken from fallow deer were histopatholgically examened. Samples were stained with Toluidin blau, Giemsa and Warthin Starry method for detection of Helicobacter-like organisms. Results: in all the samples examined chronic inflammatory changes were visibile. Noteworthy, histopathological findings were similar, indicating epizootical nature of the disease. Staining with methods for detection of gastric Helicobacter like organisms, i.e. Toluidin blau, Giemsa and Warthin-Starry did not reveal such organisms in examined abomasa. Conclusion: in examined samples of abomasa of fallow deer from Brijuni region chronic inflammatory changes were determined which, although morphologically similar to those described in dogs with Helicobacter infection can not be attributed to gastric Helicobacters since such organisms were not detected after staining with metods for their detection.
