Geochemical characterization of sediments of the Novigrad Sea area (eastern Adriatic)
The geochemical characteristics of sediments of the wider area of the Novigrad Sea were investigated in order to determine natural and anthropogenic influences on the trace element distribution. The Novigrad Sea is a small, semiclosed bay located in the central part of the eastern Adriatic coast, about 20 km from Zadar. It is connected to the Adriatic Sea in the northwest by Velebit channel and the Karin Sea in the southeast. Sedimentation processes in the Novigrad Sea are dominantly influenced by small karstic river Zrmanja, which discharges in its eastern part, forming highly stratified estuary. Smaller streams, as well as water inflow from Karin sea have less pronounced but still important influence on the sedimentation in this basin. In the surrounding area abandoned alumina plant Jadral is situated as well as several bauxite deposits which have been exploited for many years with the transshipment port situated in the Novigrad Sea. Assessment of the influence of dispersion of bauxite dust by wind and water from dozens of open bauxite pits and waste disposal site of an abandoned alumina plant in the vicinity of the Novigrad Sea on the environment is necessary. For purposes of this study, sediment cores were taken at several locations, including Zrmanja River, Novigrad Sea, Karin Sea and Velebit channel. Each core was cut into 2 cm subsamples prior to further analysis. Concentrations of trace elements in sediments were measured after total digestion by high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR ICP-MS). Geochemical analysis of sediments of the Novigrad Sea area will provide insight into the composition of the sediments, the origin of materials and deposition conditions and provide a basis for assessing the influence of waste disposed at the abandoned alumina plant Jadral and bauxite dust dispersion on the Novigrad aquatorium.
