The content of tobacco specific nitrosamines in burley tobacco in Croatia according to the leaf stalk position

The aim of the investigation was to determine TSNA content in leaves of commercially grown burley tobacco in Croatia. For this purpose, investigation was organized in the tobacco growing regions of burley tobacco in Croatia during 2010 year. Tobacco specific nitrosamines were analyzed in tobacco leaves from the bottom stalk position (seventh leaf) and the upper stalk position (fifteenth leaf), at six tobacco farms. The results have shown that the average TSNA levels in tobacco leaves vary from 12.49 ppm to 292.89. Five times higher NNN levels and three times NATB and TSNA levels were detected in upper leaves when compared to leaves with lower position.
