Assesssment of prognostic factors in breast carcinoma using survival analysis
Flow-cytometric DNA analysis was performed retrospectively from paraffin-embaded blocks in 158 consecutive patients with ductal infiltrative breast carcinoma, histological grades I, II and III (normal breast tissue was used as a control). Tumor proliferative activity, cell ploidy and DNA index were related to patients' age, tumor histological grade, size, axillary lymph node status, estrogen and progesterone receptor status and menopausal state. All parameters were related to the overall survival (OS) and disease free survival (DSF) using Cox proportional hazard regression method. We found a significant association between number of positive lymph nodes and hormonal status both with OS and DFS. Except DNA-index associated with DFS, other cell cycle parameters had no prognostic value overall patient survival an disease free survival.
