Biologically active benzimidazoles and benzimidazo[1, 2-a]quinolines
The permanent and growing interest in the synthesis of benzimidazole and their azino fused derivatives, as a one of the most extensively studied classes of heterocyclic compounds, is a direct consequence of their diverse biological properties. Because of their structural similarity with some naturally occurring compounds, a variety of derivatives play a crucial role in the function of some biologically important molecules or can easily interact with biomolecules like DNA, RNA or different proteins of the living systems. Recently, as a part of our continues scientific research in the field of potential, biologically active benzimidazoles, we have reported on the synthesis and biological activity of several groups of 2-styryl substituted benzimidazoles and benzimidazo[1, 2-a]quinolines and their heteroaromatic analogues, including positively charged amidino and amino substituted derivatives. , , Biological studies confirmed the strong anticancer potential of this class of compounds while DNA/RNA binding studies revealed intercalation into ds DNA or RNA, especially of positively charged amidino substituted benzimidazo[1, 2-a]quinolines. Due to high fluorescence intensity and excellent spectroscopic characteristics, fused benzimidazoles offer also a potential application as fluorescent probes for detection of biological important molecules in biomedical diagnostics or as chemosensors that are capable of assaying cations in solution.
