Parish Church of St. Michael, Osijek
1725–1742 Religious architecture: a High Baroque nave church with interior buttresses and side chapels Unknown architect ; painters: Franz Xaver Wagenschon (1726–1790), workshop of Paulus Antonius Senser (c. 1718–1758) Building began on the Jesuit Church of St. Michael in 1725. The church is distinctive for its facade with two bell towers (campaniles), a common feature from the Early Baroque period particularly in Jesuit architecture (churches in Vienna, Trnava and Leoben), and also envisaged for the Jesuit Academy Church of St. Catherine in Zagreb. The Church of St. Michael is, however, still notable, for it brought a new and innovative form of church architecture to the region, its interior marking the transition from the Early Baroque Wandpfeiler construction to the High Baroque. This transformation is marked by enlarged chapels between the wall columns and the placement of an altar below the window, bringing additional transverse axes into the longitudinal space of the nave.
