Protein polymorphisms in sheep population bred in Croatia : preliminary results
The Paska sheep is an autochthonous breed from island Pag (Adriatic sea), mainly kept for the production of the well known (in Croatia) hard cheese named Paski cheese. In this study isoelectric focusing and PCR-RFLP of  -lactoglobulin were performed in order to characterise Paska sheep with respect to milk protein polymorphism ( S1-casein and  -lactoglobulin). Individual milk samples of the 40 unrelated ewes were taken from five farms. Two variants in  -lactoglobulin (A and B) and four variants (A, B, C and D) in the  S1-casein locus were found. The frequency of the D variant (Welsh) was low (0.025). The obtained results are preliminary and further analysis, on a larger data set, is necessary for more complete overview of milk protein polymorphism in Paska sheep.
