Holographic Assesment Of Stress During Adhesive Post Cementation
Objectives: Since root canal represents a worst scenario for cementation, evaluation of stress in the root canal after adhesive cementation of different size composite posts is of great interest. Methods: In this study 35 teeth were used. FRC Postec Plus posts (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) sizes 1 and 3 were cemented with Multilink Automix (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein). Each root canal was prepared according to the manufacturer's instructions, fixed in the metal cylinder and placed in the holographic set-up. Each sample was initially strained and gradually subjected to side strain by 2 µm movements using micrometer bolt. After each movement hologram was recorded with digital camera and computer reconstruction obtained. Total of 10 movements was performed for each of the three situations in this order ; cement (s1), post size 1(s2) and post size 3(s3). Since the same teeth were used for all three scenarios, revision was performed after completion of each set of measurements. Total number of measurements (35 teeth, 10 takes, 3 situations) was 1050. Results: Interferometric fringes visible on the computer reconstructions represent movement. They were counted and statistically processed with ANOVA and Tukey A tests. For nonpolymerized s1 was 38, 9 ± 4, 2, s2 50, 3 ± 9, 5 and s3 45, 8 ± 5, 3 while for polymerized s1 was 40, 7 ± 6, 1, s2 49, 7 ± 7, 5 and s3 46, 5 ± 3, 5. When comparing nonpolymerized samples there was no statistical difference while for polymerized samples there was a statistically significant difference between s1 and s2 and s1 and s3. Conclusions: This study shows that smaller composite post, size 1 is most flexible and provides a best scenario while root canal filled only with cement is most rigid.
