Effect of stand density and nitrogen fertilization on the yield and quality of sugar beet seed
Three-year field trials were set up on eutrically brown, anthropogenized soil, in north-west Croatia (Zagreb) with the aim of determining and quantifying differences in the yield and quality of sugar beet seed caused by interaction of plant density and nitrogen fertilization under the same conditions of seed production without replanting. Four plant densities of seed sugar beet were investigated after crop wintering(40 000; 80 000; 120 000; and 160 000 plants/ha) as well as three nitrogen rates (60; 120; and 180 kg N/ha) applied in two identical topdressings: at the beginning of the spring growing period and immediately before shooting of inflorescence stalks. Seed yield increased significantly up to 80 000 plants/ha in 1991/92 and 1994/95, and to 120 000 plants/ha in 1993/94. Nitrogen rate of 120 kg/ha led to a significant increase of seed yield relative to 60 kg/ha. Nitrogen rate increased to 180 kg/ha resulted in further increase of seed yield, however not statistically significant. As regards seed size, participation of 4.5-5.5 mm seed was the highest (34.6%) in seed yield, followed by 3.5-4.5 mm seed (32.3%). Increase in the number of plants increased the participation of 3.5-4.5 mm fraction and decreased the participation of 4.5-5.5 mm fraction in seed yield. Higher nitrogen rates in topdressing reduced the participation of 3.5-4.5 mm fraction and showed a tendency to increasing the participation of 4.5-5.5 mm fraction in seed yield. Seed germination was less affected by the studied factors. Apart from certain regularities, seed yield and quality depended also on weather conditions, notably in the ripening period.
