Nitrogen removal from ammonium rich wastewater by nitrification and denitrification using an ativated sludge
Nitrogen removal from highly loaded pig farm wastewater was investigated. An activated sludge of several bacterial strains showing high nitrification activity was used in the experiments. The continuous nitrification/denitrification rate in a bench scale reactor was 59 gN/kg biomass,d with the addition of methanol, and 55 gN/kg biomass,d with addition of sodium acetate. The activated sludge also reduced the COD by more than 90%. The results show that methanol could be an appropriate carbon source with the peak activity achieved at the ratio C:N=2. The high nitrification rate and the low C:N ratio and the use of methanol as the carbon source make the process economically interesting.
