Space and Place in the Dance
Dance communities, whose performances are not or do not necessarily have to be connected with a particular geographic area for the locations of their performances to be identifiable to members of other dance communities, will be presented on the example of several standardised dance forms (historical dances, classical ballet and sports dances). The lack of connection of individual dance forms to particular localities conditions the exceptional mobility of members of their communities and the global framework of local manifestations. One of the reasons for the indeterminability of precise localities is found in an “outgrowing” of sorts “of one’s town”. In other words, it happens that (top-flight) dancers as well as top-flight sportsmen and women (and/or artists) “outgrow” their original physical environment and dislocate, or are constantly mobile in order to be able to compete or perform and further to acquire knowledge, skills and experience. That is how the fixed locality is lost. Mobility does not cause the locality to disappear ; rather it is constantly moved and thus variable.
