Long-term interactions between sardine and anchovy populations in the Eastern Adriatic
Sardine, Sardina pilchardus (Walb.)and anchovy,Engraulis encrasicolus (L.) are the most important and abudant species of the pelagic fish caught in the Eastern Adriatic. Studies of the possible heterogencity of sardine populations inhabiting the Adriatic showed differences in meristic, morphological and other characteristic between sardine from the northern and those from the middle Adriatic.Namely, investigations of these species confirmed the assumption that the Eastern Adriatic was inhabited by two sardine populations which differ as to the direction, time and extend of their migrations. Tested anchovy samples from various Adriatic regions point out to the homogenicity of the anchovy population in this part of the Adriatic. The annual catch fluctuations of sardine are compared with those of anchovy. The comparison points to the predominant influence of recruitment on the yield fluctuations. Fluctuations in mean sardine total lengths effect to the year class strength which rellacted in the increase in catch per unit effort, as an index of fish populations abundance. Long-term variations in catch per unit effort for the specific fish year classes in relation to primary production temperature, salinity and oxygen were analyzed for the principal fishing grounds of sardine and anchovy in the Eastern Adriatic. This correlation analysis confirmed the effects of these factors on the fish abundance.
