DEPENDENCE OF CABLE FUNDAMENTAL FREQUENCY ON BENDING STIFFNESS, STRESS AND BOUNDARY CONDITIONS
Variability of tensile forces affects the internal force distribution as well as structural alignments of cable structures. Direct measurements of cable tension forces are unsuitable because they cause damage of structures. Convenient methods for determination of cable forces imply indirect calculation from the measured cable frequencies, according to cable vibration equations. Cable vibration equations are linear if the cable sag and bending stiffness aren’t included. As for the bending stiffness, it is clear that at sufficiently high ratio of length and thickness of the cable, bending stiffness effect will be negligible and the simple taut string theory will be appropriate. However, reducing that ratio implies an increase of bending stiffness and the risk of excessive deviations of linear theory results from actual frequencies of the cable, what is the topic of this paper.
