Co-digestion of cattle manure with corn and alfalfa silages to increase biogas production
This paper presents a study of co-digestion of cattle manure with alfalfa and corn silages to enhance biogas production. The study was conducted in discontinuous reactors at thermophilic conditions with retention time of 45 days. Addition of silages to manure increased the content of total solids on average by 31, 3% in experimental group with corn silage and 21, 4% in experimental group with alfalfa silage which resulted in increased biogas production. The process of co-digestion with corn silage provided higher biogas yields but the process with alfalfa was more effective in terms of largest proportion of methane in produced biogas.
