Effect of Indomethacin on Free Fatty Acid Level after Experimental Spinal Cord Injury in Rabbits
The effect of indomethacin on free fatty acids (FFA) level was evaluated in an experimental model of spinal cord impact injury in rabbits. Indomethacin, a potent inhibitor of endogenous prostaglandin synthesis was tested in the doses of 0, 1 ; 0, 3 ; 1, 0 and 3, 0 mg/kg of body weight. The spinal cord of all decapitated animals was taken out and frozen in liquid nitrogen. For the isolation and purification of total lipids a modified method by Folch was used. The free fatty acids were separated from total lipid extract by preparative thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and after methylation identified and quantified by gas chromatography. The results of our experiments showed that indomethacin induces significant changes in the level of evaluated biochemical parameters.
