Strange parents, unrecognized child. The genesis of Croatian art history in the Vormaerz period
Art history in Croatia, according to author, have its origins in antiquarian studies that appeared in Renaissance period with the influence of the foreign travelers (Cyriacus from Ancona), who attracted others in the 17th century (Jacob Spon, George Wheler). Following the publications of Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and Robert Adam on Dalmatian monuments in the 18th century (especially Diocletian's Palace in Split), a local antiquarian community appeared in Dalmatia. Julije Bajamonti, Radoš Ante Michieli Vitturi and Ivan Josip Pavlović-Lučić helped shape first methodological approaches (autopsy, critical stance, comparative method) which in the first half of the 19th century helped develop a new generation of archaeologists and art historians.
