Transition from Pulpitis to Apical Periodontitis on Dog’s Teeth.

The aim of this research was to establish an experimental model for examination of transitory stage from pulpitis to apical periodontitis on dog's teeth. Experimental animals (eight mongrel dogs aged between 1 and 4,5 years) were divided into four experimental (six animals) and control group (two animals). After anaesthesia, we experimentally induced pulpitis on mandibular premolars (12 teeth with 24 rooth canals) by leaving trepanated pulp chambers open (first group 20 days, second 35 days, third 50 days and fourth 65 days). First molars served as control teeth. In control animals we didn’t induce infection. After experimental period animals were sacrificed. Mandible with premolars and first molars were extirpated, and prepared for histological analysis. We used the procedure of embedding undecalcified bone in methylmetacrylate. Specimens were analysed qualitatively. Histological analysis showed different stages of transition from pulpitis to apical periodontitis between 20 and 50 experimental days. During stage of pulpitis there was an exudative apical periodontitis with alveolar bone resorption and rare cells of acute inflammation in periapical region. Teeth with partial pulp necrosis showed subacute apical periodontitis with proliferation of granulomatous tissue and chronic inflammatory cells. After 65 days all teeth showed pulp necrosis with chronic apical periodontitis. We conclude that apical bone resorption with inflammation initiate during stage of pulpitis on dog’s teeth.
