Vertigo in the neurological emergency room
Although neurological causes account for only 10% of patients with vertigo, dizziness and vertigo are the most common referrals in neurology emergency department. The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the causes, risk factors, and imaging modalities in patients with vertigo. Six-month data of patients examined at outpatient emergency neurology department were analyzed.Petients were refferred by general practitioner, emergency physician and other specialists, or were brought by relatives to the clinic without being previously seen by health service. Demographic data, risk factors, early imiging evaluation rate and findings and rates of admission were analyzed.From January 1 to june 30, 2010, there were 401 patients (252 females) with vertiginous symptomatology , mean age 59+/-17 years. Symptoms of vertigo were present in 368 patirnts, and 134 were complaining of dizziness. Out of 401 patients , 72 were admitted to Neurology Department and 54 were referred to other emergency departments. Vertigo is a common referral to the neurology emergency room, yet only the quarter of patients need emergency neurological work-up.
