Responsiveness of nondormant wheat seeds to osmotic stress and bract extract inhibition at two germination temperatures
Germination of isolated wheat embryos or whole grains can be inhibited by media containing ABA, CT, unknown inhibitors from wheat bracts or osmotically active agents. Germination of nondormant grains of five wheat genotypes was examined at two temperatures (200C and 330C) on three media (distilled water, bract extract and 2% D-mannitol solution). The germination rates were calculated by using survival analysis of the germination data. The germination rate in distilled water and response to bract extract inhibition and osmotic stress (D-mannitol solution) differed between genotypes. All genotypes exhibited slower germination rate in distilled water and increased responsiveness to bract extract inhibition and osmotic stress at the higher temperature. These results are in agreement with previous reports that ABA responsiveness is enhanced at higher temperatures. Thus, temperature effect on the seed response to bract extract inhibition or osmotic stress could serve as a supplement criterion in screening for pre-harvest sprouting resistance.
