Temporal change in allele frequency in the Maksimir 3 synthetic maize population

At the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zagreb in 1990, a synthetic maize population designated as Maksimir 3 Synthetic (M3S) was created by intercrossing 12 inbred lines whose origins trace back to several open-pollinated varieties and landraces from different regions of the former Yugoslavia. After creation, M3S was subjected to three cycles of recurrent selection for improved yield and disease resistance and a fourth cycle of selection for increased nitrogen use efficiency. The objective of this study was to determine the changes in allele frequency and population structure from C0 to C3, and from C3 to C4N0 and C4N150 populations using SSR markers. The high number of loci with significant changes in allele frequency (38% from C0 to C3, 21% from C3 to C4N0 and 39% from C3 to C4N150) suggests that selection was significant factor affecting allelic frequencies in the M3S maize population. From a total of 630 possible SSR allele pairs, three pairs in the C0 population, seven pairs in the C3, and seven pairs in the C4N0, and six pairs of alleles in C4N150 populations included alleles which were in significant linkage disequilibrium. Majority of loci involved in significant linkage disequilibriom were selectively nonneutral according to Waples’ neutrality tests indicating that selection was important factor in creating linkage disequilibrium in the M3S maize population.
