Comparative efficiency of three horse fly (Diptera: Tabanidae) traps

In this study we examined the effectiveness of three types of horse fly traps (Box, Nzi and Manitoba) for monitoring purposes. Nine traps (three traps per type) were organized in 3x3 Latin square designs and baited with 1-octen- 3 -ol during 25 days and three separate periods. All traps caught 1986 specimens of 11 horse fly species. The most abundant species was Tabanus bromius Linnaeus, 1758(57.9%), followed by Tabanus tergestinus Egger, 1859 (20.8%), Tabanus maculicornis Zetterstedt, 1842(15.6%), Tabanus sudeticus Zeller, 1842(2.0%), Atylotus loewianus (Villeneuve, 1920)(1.4%) and Tabanus autumnalis Linnaeus, 1761(1.3%). Welch analysis of variance showed that there is significant differences between efficiency of traps (F (2, 40.99)=19.52, p=0.000). Post hoc Games–Howell test showed that Box traps were more efficient than Nzi (p=0.045) and Manitoba (p=0.000), and Nzi traps were more efficient than Manitoba traps (p=0.001). There was no difference in performance of traps between three sampling periods: Box traps (F(2, 22)=2, 280., p=0.126), Nzi traps (F(2.22)=2.315., p=0.122)and Manitoba traps (F(2.11)=1.533., p=0.238). In every period Box performed better than Nzi and Manitoba traps and Nzi traps performed better than Manitoba traps. Ratio between box and Nzi traps was 2.5:1, Box vs. Manitoba traps 11.8:1 and Nzi vs. Manitoba traps was 4.6:1. Nzi traps were more efficient than Box traps only in collecting Tabanus autumnalis (1.5:1) and Tabanus sudeticus (7:1).
