SOCIAL AND RELIGIOUS INFLUENCES ON ORGAN DONATION

Organ transplantation is a common lifesaving and life-enhancing procedure, but the lack of organ donation continues to be a major limiting factor. Transplantation medicine opens many medical, moral, legal, social, theological and philosophical questions. Therefore the practice of transplantation varies among different societies and cultures. In this study we examined the level of information about organ transplantation in different religious communities and their attitude towards organ donation. Additionally, we analyzed the activity of our religious communities in promoting transplantation medicine. Our data suggest that a better public information about organ donation and transplantation is needed, provided by the Ministry of Health and other authorities, as well as media and religious communities. Most religious communities do not attempt to promote organ transplantation through their work. More than half of examinees would appreciate some form of material compensation for organ donation. Our study also showed a strong influence of family consent on the decision for organ donation in Catholics and Orthodox Christians, while the religious community is more important for Muslims, and the media for Protestants and atheists. Public collaboration is very important to promote the social necessity of organ donation.
