Analysis of gender differences in fundamental movement skills – longitudinal study
It is known that preschool and early school years are crucial in terms of developing fundamental movement skills. The aim of this research was to determine gender differences in fundamental movement skills for 6- and 10-year old children. Two experimental groups consisted of 76 six-year-olds (44 boys and 32 girls) and 43 ten-year-olds (14 boys and 29 girls). For fundamental movement skills screening purpose „Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency 2“ (BOT-2) was applied. Younger children were subdued to14 tests that best represent the certain motor area, while older children had to complete a battery of 24 selected tests. All tests represented 8 motor areas. Results of independent samples t test showed initial differences between boys and girls in 5 out of 8 variables (motor areas) in 6-year-olds. Only two significant differences occurred in 10-year-olds: in fine motor precision (in favor of girls) and upper limb coordination. (in favor of boys). These differences probably exist because of the different type of activities that boys and girls practice in their free time, gender-based activities.
