Emerging communication structures in new media systems: flows and counter-flows through wikis
The goal is to analyze connections between a wiki-like and a wiki-based project and their external media ecology and social context. WikiLeaks (WL) and Wikipedia (WP) projects have different goals. WL attempts to control the agenda through obtaining and publishing information deemed to be of public relevance. WL sets the agenda, controls the information flow through cooperation with mass media, and creates a document database. The case of WP, and the In the News (ITN) section on the English WP, is completely the opposite. The mass media set the agenda, but WP resets the information flow, and, through remediation of publicly available information, creates a novel format of publicly available knowledge. Although based on somewhat similar technologies, and not being formally institutionalized, these projects have significantly altered public communication structures and transformed the sphere of public communication. Despite obvious differences they both operate under the assumption of radical openness, transparency and accessibility.
