Drought monitoring system in Croatia
Drought monitoring in Croatia have been established in 2009 by the National Meteorological and Hydrological Service. It provides the real time drought monitoring on a daily scale as well as for actual month and previous 3, 6, 12, 24 and 48 months. The standardised precipitation index is used for monthly and multi-months scale with the calibration period 1961-2000. Additionally, the precipitation ratio against normal, difference from normal, associated percentiles and return periods are provided. For daily monitoring the square-root-normal distribution is employed to obtain the theoretical percentiles using only the average monthly precipitation amounts from the same time period of 1961-2000. These percentiles constitute a frame that enables the assessment of the present cumulative precipitation amount deviation from the normal. The paper gives the overview of the existing statistical and technological methods for drought monitoring in Croatia demonstrating the work-flow from its beginning to date. Finally, some plans for the further improvements and establishing of drought early warning system are presented
