Ecological and relief characteristics of vineyards in Croatia
This research has been conducted with the objective of analyzing both ecological and relief characteristics of vineyards in Croatia. The analysis was done in GIS environment. Data about vineyards were taken from the Habitat map of Croatia (M 1:100000). By using a digital elevation model, we calculated relevant relief elements and landform categories, and joined climate data to the vineyards. Using the method by Amerine and Winkler (1944) we defined distribution of five vine-growing regions based on total thermal energy through the year, using only days with temperatures higher than 10°C. Besides mean temperature values, successful growing of grapevine is determined by elevation (0 – 380 m.a.s.l.), total amount of precipitation (600 – 1380 mm), minimum temperature (above -5°C), exposure (more often south-west) and relief position. Most frequent placements of vineyards are on flat slopes (52%) and lower slopes (22%). Results of ANOVA have shown that there are significant differences in relief end ecological characteristics of vineyards among vine-growing regions. Based on the result obtained, we have developed a predictive map of areas favourable for growing grapevine in Croatia.
