Modeling damage of concrete caused by corrosion of steel reinforcement
Three-dimensional fully coupled chemo-hygro- thermo-mechanical model is used in a 3D transient FE analysis to study pull-out capacity of corroded steel reinforcement from a concrete beam-end specimen, which was exposed to aggressive environmental conditions. The expansion of corrosion products is modeled by 1D contact corrosion elements on the reinforcement-concrete contact surface. Once the reinforcement is depassivated (begin of corrosion), corrosion rate is calculated and corrosion contact elements are automatically activated generating radial compressive forces, which damage concrete cover. Finally, to predict the effect of corrosion on the pull-out capacity of reinforcement, the reinforcement bar is pulled out from the concrete specimen. Similar as in the experiments, it is shown that corrosion of steel reinforcement significantly reduces pull-out capacity.
