From Roman Palace to the City

Roman emperor Diocletian, Dalmatian by birth, built his palace in 305 on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. In the 7th century refugees from nearby Salona, capital of Dalmatia, found security between the walls of the Palace where they founded city of Split. During 1700 years, houses were built inside and outside of the Palace forming a very dense and multilayered city. In 1979, Diocletian's palace and historic core of Split were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
