Pavlovići u Hrvatskoj i Bosni - Hercegovini : neki od poznatih Pavlovića

Pavlović is a typical patronymic developed from the father's name. The surname Pavlović was present in Zadar in the thirtheenth century. In Zadar we can also find the oldest surnames from the beginning of the twelfth century which developed from nicknames. The Pavlovićes were also a powerful Bosnian patrician house in the Bosnian Kingdom ( which was founded in 1377 and destroyed by Turkish invasion in 1463 ). The members of the Pavlovićes were later accepted by the nobility of Dubrovnik. The main part of the Pavlovićes who lived in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina came directly from the region of medieval Bosnia. According to the available literature ( which is mainly Croatian in the south of Croatia there were older forms of surname Pavlović: Radinović-Pavlović and Pavlović-Sadia ; Pavlović-Bosnese ; Pavlović-Fontana ; Pavlović-Lučić ; Paulović-Lucić ; Pavlović-Brkljačić i.e. the forms Paulovich, Paulouich, Pauolouich, Paflovich, Paullouich and Pavlovich-ia or Paulouich Hunsci ; these surnames are mainly connected to the region Dubrovnik and the wider region of Split i.e. Zadar. In Istria, besides the surname Pavlović, we can find some of the surnames from the south of Croatia as Paulouich, but also Paulović, i.e. Paulovich ; some of the Pavlovićes were district-perfects. In the north of Croatia, besides the above mentioned surnames as Paulovich ( in the perishes of Ludbreg, Križevci and Kuzmin ), we can also find the surname Vuk-Pavlović. In the est of Croatia, besides the most frequent surname Pavlović i.e. Paulovich, we can also find Pavlović-Bošnjak in the region Požega. We think that the above two-word surnames express the wish to achieve a clear family identity which was endangered by a frequent appearance of the surname Pavlović and it probably does not reveal any other specific characteristics. In the region of the Middle Bosnia the toponym Pavlović survived near Kraljeva Sutjeska-Kraljeva Sutiska and near Skender Vakuf - Uskoplje. The toponyms Pavlović and Pavlović Brdo can be also found in the region Lika ( Brinje-Križpolje ) and Gorski kotar ( the wider region of Ogulin ). According to the available literature the main part of the Pavlovićes in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina are Catholics but they are Orthodox too and some are Muslims. We mustn't forget that the medieval Pavlovićes were the members of the Bosnian Church ( they were heretics who belonged to the Catholic Church which existed in that time in Bosnia ). Among the Serbs, Montenegrins, Macedonians and Bulgarians there were no constant, hereditary surnames till the nineteenth century and there were also the Croatian Vlahs ( they were romanized nomads with Chroatian characteristics, i.e. they had Croatian names and they were Catholics ). There was a great number of Pavlovićes in the early and late history of Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina so we should mention some of them: a historiographer Pavao Pavlović from Zadar ; a historian Ivan Josip Pavlović-Lučić from Makarska ; a painter Juraj Pavlović from Split ; a doctor Ivan Pavlović-Fontana from Knin ; or a writer Matej Pavlović from Petrovaradin, i.e. a philosopher Pavao Vuk-Pavlović from Koprivnica or a Croatian martyr and oppositionist Ludvig Pavlović from Vitina near Ljubuški. We payed attention to those persons whose surname was Pavlović, who are dead and were active and lived in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina in order to be objective and to achieve a real evaluation. This study presents a lot of problems ; as a multicentrical origin of the Pavlovićes, then it suggests that the Bosnian Church should be studied and better explalained ; and then it presents the problem of eminent Pavlovićes who have already marked this convulsive ultimate west of the Balkans which is still budened by blood and war.
